Dear Step Up Family,
The legislation that strengthens the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship just passed in the State Capitol. It is a tremendous achievement for this program. Without the kind of work performed in your classrooms, this never would have been possible.
This legislation puts the scholarship program on a path to meet the long-term needs of both the families and the schools, and it will take effect on July 1. (Gov. Crist must sign the bill first, of course, but we are confident of his support since the bill was one of his legislative priorities.) Immediately, we will be able to increase the scholarship amount and accept more contributions to expand enrollment. Two other provisions, for academic and financial transparency of participating schools, won’t take effect immediately.

I want you to be aware that in a volatile political environment on education this year, we were able to pass this momentous legislation with strong bipartisan support in both chambers. We had almost half the Democrats, a majority of the Black Caucus and the entire Hispanic Caucus. That’s a testament to the hard work you do every day helping low-income children.
You are a part of a phenomenal group of advocates I've worked with for the last decade and I appreciate everyone’s great work in getting this landmark legislation passed with such a huge margin. I’ll let you know when the governor is going to sign the bill but you should encourage him to do so….
